One major theme in the novel is parenthood. This theme is illustrated through Paige's feeling that she cannot be the parent her child deserves because she doesn't know how. Throughout the novel, Paige struggles with her own mother's abandonment of her as a child. Paige is afraid that she will repeat her mother's mistakes.
