• From 1851 to 1857, Harriet made eleven trips to Maryland to help bring escaped slaves North on the Underground Railroad.

• In November of 1856, Harriet helped Joe Bailey, his brother, and others make the trip to freedom.

• Because of the Fugitive Slave Law, Harriet and the group were targeted and sought after all the way, and danger was always imminent.

• When Harriet encountered guards at a river, she led the group across in a wagon of bricks and safely conducted them further into Canada.

• The author’s historical note in this chapter describes John Brown murdering five pro-slavery settlers in Kansas.
