How does Richard Hooker use imagery in MASH?

While Father John is administering last rites to a man undergoing surgery, Duke tells him to help with another surgery. The Father assists Duke, but the reader is left with the impression that in war time one must focus on the living and let the dead bury the dead, as the man had already passed away.
