According to Peter Pierce, in his article on Dream Stuff, there is an artful casualness in Malouf's stories, and he praises their focus "on the variegated stuff of dreams, longed for and summoned up. Or come unbidden, bringing peace, or disquiet," which, he claims is their "unifying metaphorical thread."
