One major theme in the novel is the permanence of land. This theme is illustrated through the importance Tara holds for Scarlet, as the world changes in the midst of the Civil War..... leaving behind nothing more than the land her father left her. Scarlet's father instills this importance of the land in his daughter from the time she is young, and it is the one lesson she carries with her throughout the novel.
