Savitri was the daughter of King Mudra, and she was named after the goddess Savitri. Because she shared a name with a goddess, she found that no one would come forth to be her husband. Thus, with her father's blessing, she set forth to find her perfect mate. When she returned home, the sage Narada told her that the man she chose to be her husband, Satyavan, would die in a year, and that she should choose someone else. Savitri, however, married him anyway, and when the year was up, she went with him into the forest where he passed away. Savitri then saw Yama, who is known as Death, and followed him and charming him with her philosophies, he relinquished her husband's life back to her.
