Nala, the king of Nishadha, falls in love with the beautiful princess Damayanti. They later marry and live a happy life together, at least until Nala loses everything, including his kingdom, to his brother in a game of dice. As a result, Nala and his wife are ordered out of the city and into exile. Nala abandons Damayanti because he knows that his path will be a dangerous one. Damayanti, however, wanders far and wide in order to find him. In the end, they reunite, despite Nala's altered appearance. He wins back his kingdom, after learning how to play dice well from King Rituparna, but being the forgiving and generous man he is, Nala gives his brother half of the kingdom to rule.
