Who is Aedwen in Godric by Frederick Buechner?

Aedwen is Godric's mother. Before her husband's death, Godric remembers Aedwen as being a joyful, loving woman. After her husband's death, she becomes surly, questioning the existence of God. On her deathbed, she pleads with Godric to help her get to Heaven.
