The tone of the book is factual and well documented. It is both objective and subjective. The tone is objective in the presentation of the facts as they occur and is very well documented. Coll tells the story of Afghanistan, the rivaling factions and what happens. He explains how the jihadist training camps come into being and how al-Qaeda is formed and how it grows and becomes so powerful. He presents the facts of United States involvement and United States policy. This is where the tone becomes somewhat subjective.
