The main setting of the story, the roof, is very important to the plot. Sitting on the roof provides Willa Jo with the opportunity to come to terms with her grief, and to see the situation from a distance. The distance provided by the height of the roof allows her to remove herself both physically and metaphorically. By seeing everything from above and beyond, she and Little Sister are able overcome their grief and come to terms with the death of their baby sister.
