Scientific study is another theme. When Genie was discovered, it was learned that she had been isolated from all social interaction and was unable to speak as a normal child her age would do. For this reason, great interest was garnered in her case. Almost since the beginning of scientific study there has been a question of whether children learn to speak because they are born with certain abilities in language or because of the care and encouragement of their caregivers. Genie was a case in which scientists could finally answer that question.
