One major theme in the novel, Gap Creek, is the power of nature. This theme is illustrated through nature's great beauty, its power to destroy, its power to thwart those who attempt to tame her, and it power to ruin them as well. The novel's message is clear.... nature will always be more powerful than man..... to think you can prevail is foolish.
