John McCain ran against Barak Obama in the 2008 race. He managed to bubble to the top of the Republican party and became their nominee to oppose Obama's reeelection. was the Republican nominee for US President. His often too conservative platform did not come across well and as a result many who would have voted Republican voted against him and for Barak Obama.
