Flora runs away in the middle of the night because she believes her mother has kidnapped Ulysses with the intentions of killing him. Flora takes Mary Ann with her because she is hoping that her mother would be willing to trade Ulysses with Mary Ann. In the end, however, Flora discovers that her belief that her mother loves Mary Ann more than her is not true. In fact, Flora learns that when her mother read Ulysses' last poem she realized just how much she loved her daughter and needed to make amends to her.
