What is the "Thin Red Line" in Flashman at the Charge by George MacDonald Fraser?

The "Thin Red Line" is the name given to the first battle in the Battle of Balaclava. The red line is a direct allusion to the two columns of soldiers under the command of Sir Colin Campbell.
