Orson Welles (1915-1985) gained fame as an actor before becoming a filmmaker. He was renown for his breathy peace voice, and he stunned the world with his performance of "The War of the Worlds" on radio, a show that panicked America. Hollywood loved Wells, and he was unquestioned when it came to choice and production.
