Mary Pickford (1893 to 1979) began working for Biograph as a teenager. Ten years later, she was making half a million dollars a year, owned her own studio, and helped form the United Artists. Pickford was most famous for her roles based on Victorian literature where she brought a Madonna-like sweetness to her characters.
