In the story, One Sitting There, a woman has to throw away her bread, an act that brings back memories of her sister dying as a child. The woman's parents never wanted to throw any food away, particularly bread. Thus, the bread has become a symbol of her dead sister. When the woman is forced to throw away her spoiled bread, which represents her memories, she finally is freed from the past and can enjoy her sister's memory.
