The stone in the snowball is a symbol of Dunstan's enduring guilt over hitting Mary Dempster with it, covered in snow, when he was a child. Dunstan keeps this rock his whole life as a reminder of what he did as well as Boy Stanton's complete lack of empathy or responsibility over the incident.
