One major theme in the novel, Fields of Fire, is the extent to which the Vietnam War and those who served with the American forces have been so completely misunderstood. In response, the author addresses this theme by providing his readers with a good, hard look at who these men were.... noting, most of these Marines were not men.... they were boys. We are also provided with a detailed view of how these boys were treated upon their return to home soil.... the things they could not comprehend, and the beliefs that those at home had wrongly taken as fact.
