Who is Snake from Fields of Fire and what is their importance?

Snake volunteered for service in the Marines. He is described as temperamental and prone to fighting, thus, when he couldn't hold onto a job for any length of time, he decided to enlist. Snake's demeanor made him a perfect soldier, the kind of soldier who inspired loyalty in his comrades, and the kind of man the men looked up to. He'd found his niche.
