Hooks presents herself as an advocate for the "women of the margins". In contrast, she presents Betty Friedan as an advocate for "women of privilege." These women, according to the author, are the white, upper middle class women who, at the time of the early feminist movement, became discontented with what they perceived as their limitations. As a result of this discontent, they strove to become more like the men they believed oppressed them. The author credits these women with sending the feminist movement into a direction that instead of changing the system, reinforced it, eventually damaging both the movement's progress and reputation.
