For the author, both Betty Friedan and her book, The Feminine Mystique, serve as a symbol of the problems in perspective embodied in the feminist movement from its earliest days to the present - that it is essentially a movement of upper middle class white women grounded in a discontent that in essence is as sexist, imperialistic and capitalistic as the system it's trying to change.
