How does Johann Wolfgang von Goethe use imagery in Faust. First Part?

At the beginning of the play Faust struggles with his own self-worth, as well as his faith in God. He knows he was made in God's image, but he sees himself as little more than a worm. It is the imagery that Faust holds within his mind that allows the devil to get a grip on him.
