How were Papa's failures contrasted by Woody's return?

Papa's failures left him a lost and broken man. When Woody returns from the war, he has learned many things about their family and about himself. As a fully vested American citizen, he is able to make a life for himself and his family where Papa could not. Woody embraced the future, while Papa lived in the past.
