The Mechanical Hound in Fahrenheit 451 is a robot that sort of looks like a dog, but has eight legs. It hunts down and kills those that are supposedly 'free thinkers'. They are especially good at smelling books, which indicate that someone is becoming a free thinker. The hound is one of many references that the author uses to reinforce the theme of a destructive technology utilized by the government to control its people.
