Who is Melina in Esperanza Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan?

Melina and Esperanza become fast friends at the camp, as they are both around the same age. Melina, unlike Esperanza, is married with a child, and thus, over the course of the novel the two girls grow apart, as Melina spends more and more time with the older ladies.
