Carver uses literary realism in striving for an objective presentation of the everyday life.... of Chekhov's life. Realistic writers also strive to accurately represent the ways in which characters speak and behave in a given place and time. For example, Carver's dramatization of Dr. Schwöhrer using the telephone to call for a bottle of champagne realistically depicts the way a person would make a phone call in 1904.
