Gilgamesh goes in search of immortality because he suddenly becomes aware of his own mortality after the death of his friend, Enkidu. Gilgamesh is unable to prove himself worthy of immortality, but he is able to obtain a plant that will restore his youth. Unfortunately, the plant is eaten by a snake before Gilgamesh can use it.
