In Chapter Eleven, Ender and Bean discuss the younger boy's performance, and why he was selected for combat training. Bean demonstrates that he understands that this is combat training, that they are training to fight and kill the buggers. Ender laments that most of the kids behave as if the training were the end in and of itself. They don't see the big picture. Ender, in a rare show of weakness, implies that he is overworked and quickly running out of ideas. He tells Bean that he needs him to think up ideas that other people would dismiss as stupid. He orders him to select five soldiers from a list of twelve to train as a special squad. The special squad, Ender explains, will spend most of their time with the normal toons, only working together when called upon.
