Control is a recurring idea. Augusten has very little control over his life at the beginning of the memoir. Although he is a talented writer, his drinking gives him little control over his actions, and he is frequently late for work. His apartment is such a mess that he can't have anyone else come over. He has no control over life, instead letting his drinking run his life for him. As Augusten goes to rehab and tries to get a handle on his drinking, he has problems controlling himself.
