Why was Obama uncomfotable talking about whites as racists?

In Chapter Four, we learn that Obama could never comfortably talk about the racism of white people without thinking about his white mother and grandparents and was never sure of what to make of Ray's alternating hatred of the racism of whites and efforts to get along with whites in order to smooth social interactions.
