In Chapter Nine, Lauren moves into Philip's condo and finds the closets full of clothing. Lauren is thrilled when Philip tells her she can have the clothes, which are clearly the clothes of his former lover. The reader is a little hesitant about Lauren's open acceptance of this gift, however, wondering if someone might begin to wonder if she is also Philip's mistress. This seems to foreshadow a time when a misunderstanding, a theme of the novel, might cause Lauren some difficulty.
