Donald Barthelme

What Barthelme short stories would you recommend reading for a 300 level fiction class?

I would suggest "Robert Kennedy Saved from Drowning," because it is a clear example of Barthelme's nonlinear, percussive narrative structure and it offers a sense of history while speaking to modern events. It might be a good springboard for a discussion of public persona vs. private reality, and the extent to which each is crafted.

"Balloon" is also a great springboard for a discussion of artistic intent.
