Consider that this is a new world order where previous rules around fairness, individuality, and freedom have changed. In chapter three, Beatrice wakes to a find herself still in the chair. Tori says she is "perplexed" by the test results and asks Beatrice to wait a moment. Tori returns and says each phase of the simulation is designed to rule out factions, typically leaving only one. Tori says Beatrice only ruled out Candor and Amity. She says Beatrice is equally suited for Abnegation, Dauntless, and Erudite, and that a person with these results is called "Divergent." She warns Beatrice to tell no one about the findings and that doing so could be dangerous. She asks Beatrice to leave the school without talking to anyone. She walks home and encounters a homeless man. The homeless are those who failed to make the grade with their chosen factions. These people hold menial jobs and are despised and pitied by the factions.
