Early in the story, the episode in which the young man enters the apartment where Hickock meets an unidentified woman foreshadows Dick Hickock's impending humiliation. In addition, the introduction of Amanda's staff alerts the reader to the possibility that one of them (Martha, Helen, or Barry) might be leaking information to the author of the DIRT fax.
