A reoccurring idea is male and female relationships. There is quite a broad array of male/female relationships in the novel. And while there are two gay male characters in the novel, these relationships qualify as secondary based on the characters' position in the narrative hierarchy. For the most part, it can be said that Dirt is a decidedly heterosexual book.
