Tyler's language allows the reader to be a rotating observer of the thought processes of each character in turn, watching them grow and develop in their internal storytelling. This style gives readers a uniquely omniscient view of the psychological development of an entire family, in all its pain and trauma, progressing through the years to a place of healing.
