In Diary of Anne Frank, Mr. Dussell gives a very different view of what is going on outside, than what the helpers have been telling those in hiding. He reports that many people receive their call up orders and are never heard from again. He says that many have been taken from their homes in the middle of the night. Many of the names that he mentions are people that are known to Anne and her family. This really drives home the reality of the situation for Anne, and for the rest of the group it begins to make them believe that they might not make it.
