Politics and peace is a recurring idea in this book. After the crash of Air Force One and the death of the President, Vice President Nafe assumes his duties of office. A hard liner, Nafe wants to use the earthquake and crash of Air Force One as a way to eradicate communism and take a hard stand against the Chinese. The President had just met with the Chinese President and received a jade bust as a gift. It was part of their attempt to put together a peace accord and President Bishop believes though it may take finesse, it is possible.
