Throughout Dead Irish, there is a sense of renewal regarding Dismas Hardy. At the outset of the novel, Hardy seems to be a lost soul, drifting through life trying to maintain a steady pace, but not allowing himself to experience joy. The reader is given the sense that Hardy is unwilling to take a chance and be hurt.
