Although Styron describes a few different physical places and geographical locations, the primary setting of his story is the author's mind itself. He describes Paris, his home in Connecticut, Martha's Vineyard, and the hospital to which he admits himself, but these descriptions are sketchy and not important to the story's development. What is important is Styron's emotional health, the interplay between his behavior and the trajectory of his depression and his cure.
