Hope is a recurring idea in the story. The central principle that kept people going in the ghetto was hope. Daniel says that hope is what kept them all in that struggle when it would have been easier to give up. Daniel’s father knows that hope is as important as food in keeping his family going when he traded noodles for a radio so the family could listen to the news reports.
