Friendships and relationships are recurring ideas that run throughout the novel. First, there is the long time friendship between Poirot and Hastings. The two men have a long history together. Since both men are alone without wives, the two men often depend and lean on one another. When Poirot dies, Hastings feels as if he is truly alone in the world.
