What is the author's style in Crow Lake by Mary Lawson?

The language in the novel is simple English. The novel includes some slang, but it is slang that is universally recognized, therefore causes no difficulty for the reader. There are no foreign phrases in the novel but there is some scientific language based on Katie's career as an invertebrate ecologist. This language is not difficult however and does not create any trouble for the reader.
