Though she is not aware of it initially, the main conflict was the protagonist vs herself (Cross Creek). She inherited a farm that she did not know how to run, found herself surrounded by people whom she could not identify with, and alone. Turning to nature for her comfort, education, and sustenance, she learned from animals how to get along with people, and to view with new eyes the poverty that laid all around her.
