Early in the play, Fitzgerald foreshadows that drinking will play a major role in the events that unfold. When we first meet Joel, he promises himself not to drink at the Calman's party, as he doesn't want to do anything to jeopardize his status as a rising star. From the start, the reader can infer that alcohol will play a large part in Joel's downfall when he immediately accepts and drinks the cocktail that Stella puts in his hand.
