Pregnancy is a central topic in Cradle and All. Every action taken by the characters in this book surrounds the girls' pregnancies, their health, and their babies' futures. The methods by which the girls became pregnant is of particular importance in determining whether or not the girls' offspring are holy. The very first chapter opens with Kathleen coming to terms with her pregnancy. Because both girls are virgins, the idea that they are in fact pregnant is an interesting concept.
