The human psyche is a recurring idea in the book. Wilson writes a very ironic book, where he admits to not believing in many of the things he states. He calls this an agnostic viewpoint. This is contradicted by Wilson, with the help of Leary, when he gives a strong and forthright statement of his beliefs. What gives the book an added edge is that many of the things that Wilson does are dangerous and adventurous, although often absurd.
