In the 2nd paragraph "the story opens"... the spelling of Frances /Francis has been interchanged. Correct: Francis (Fix) is the male spelling; his daughter is Frances (es is the female spelling).

What goes in here?????

I'm sorry, I do not see the spelling you've noted in the second paragraph of Chapter One. You are, however, correct. The masculine spelling ends with the "is" and the feminine "es".
